Both of these films were enjoyable to watch, yet sad in their own ways. Seeing Cagney bullying practically everyone was a shocker for me, especially when he smashed a grapefruit into the lady's face. It's obvious, however, that he was fully immersed into the role of a heartless mobster, therefore making the film a success. To see Karloff as a monster was fun in a peculiar way, but when emotions are seen from the monster, a viewer can't help but feel bad for him, knowing that everyone was scared of him. He wanted to do many of the things that normal humans would do, including having friends, but he was just misunderstood. Even the female monster was scared of him, which was funny in its own way. The technology in the film was interesting to watch, as it must have been one of the earliest times where special effects were used in such a capacity.
I too enjoyed both films (surprisingly). What I am enjoying most about this class is the diverse exposure to so many types of films, genres, eras, etc.
It is fun to see just how movies and film making have evolved from the silent era. We've come a long way!
