The Player was exhausting movie to watch. All the cross-talk (continual conversations) and constant moving motion of the filming made me feel like I was on a very long car ride with my teenage boys and all their ADHD friends. Tim Robins did a brilliant job acting in this movie, he played a paranoid, egomaniac with and inferior complete perfectly. The happy ending was predictable and it felts slight sad and frightening real.
I disagree. I loved the fast paced story line. I thought the actors did an outstanding job, especially Cher in her red dress at a black and white party. Tim Robins was brilliant and I felt in order to keep up with the actual fast paced environment of the film industry the story had to go at a fast pace. I loved this movie.......
I really enjoyed The Player. I thought Tim Robbins did an amazing job in his role. It was also fun to try and spot all the stars that appeared in the film. I thought I saw "Ginger" from Gilligan's Island, did anyone notice that too?
I'm in the middle about The Player. To me it felt like it was a bit too long of a movie, but there were only a few instances where it slowed down, which translates to decent pacing. I agree that the ending was predictable, however, I think that was the point. I enjoyed the little parallels and clues. Once they showed the Bruce Willis/Julia Roberts happy ending, they were basically TELLING the audience that the The Player would end happily. A large part of the suspense for me built around figuring out who the threatening writer was, but oddly, we never did get to see the antagonist, we only heard him in the phone conversation at the end. All-in-all, its a good movie, but I likely won't buy it on DVD if I run across it in the Wal-Mart discount bin.
Hi class. I actually liked the movie. I related to the fast-pace, talking-over each other (reminded me of growing up with 9 older siblings!) and seeing all of the stars - what a cast! Tim Robbins' acting was good and he was believable as a stressed out Hollywood big shot. Even though the ending was predictable, I would watch this movie again.
I am also in the middle in regards to The Player. While there were a number of famous faces on-screen, I found the conversational scenes too distracting and jarring to enjoy. The love story was a little too contrived for my tastes.
Altman's use of conversational cross talk did not enhance the reality of the movie for me but I suspect that this gimmick was the reason that Marlee Matlin's interpreter did not move to stand in a better position when she is addressed by Tim Robbins at the party. Her awkward attempts to follow the actors' verbal communication and to also get her interpreter's signs seemed to echo the difficulty the audience had to endure.
I enjoyed reading over the IMDB entry for this film, especially the trivia and connections pages. It was interesting reading.
I enjoyed the overall theme and ideas the movie presents, but the characters failed to be developed throughout the film besides Tim Robins' character. I don't know that any character had more than 5 minutes of quality screen time besides Robins. Movie was definitely entertaining.
Altman set the mise-en-scene with many movie posters as a running commentary on the story. I noted posters with titles such as "They Made Me a Criminal", "Hollywood Story", "Laura" (which is a murder investigation focused movie), "Prison Break", "Murder in the Big House", "King Kong", "Highly Dangerous", and "Dial M For Murder". Each is noteworthy and it's interesting that I noted no posters that didn't fit the scene themes.
