Burlesque is a Drama/Romance movie directed by Steve Antin and
released on November 24, 2010. This movie sold around 90.5 million at the box
office and around 130.9 million with DVD sales. Burlesque is about Ali
(Christina Aguilera) who moves from a small town in Kentucky to Los Angeles to live
out her dream of being a dancer. When she moves, she ends up not getting any
gigs and comes across the Burlesque lounge where she falls in love when she
notices the burlesque show going on before her. She desperately wants to become
a dancer there and talks to Tess (Cher) about becoming a dancer. Tess turns her
down and Ali decides not to listen, so she picks up a tray and begins to
waitress around the club. Eventually, one of the dancers gets pregnant and Ali
auditions for her job. With much hesitation, Tess agrees to hire Ali and she
becomes the club’s newest burlesque dancer. The oldest girl, Nikki, becomes
threatened and tries to sabotage Ali’s biggest performance by stopping the
music she plans on dancing to. Ali then freaks out and sings the song herself
while performing her dance routine. She kills the performance and Tess agrees
to base the whole show around Ali’s voice. All the while, Tess is struggling to
pay the bills to the lounge and has received multiple notices from the bank
about foreclosure. Toward the end of the movie, Ali reaches out to Tess with a
plan that will save the club. They go to the real estate office next door and
explain to the man that he needs to purchase the air rights to the club and the
movie ends on a happy note. This is my favorite movie because I loved seeing
the Burlesque culture being shown in a modernized way and I loved hearing
Christina Aguilera’s voice. I believe her & Cher worked very well together. Written by Tucker Vermillion
