The Shape of Water by Lale Parez

Last year, movie theaters finished the 2017 with a spectacular well-written movie called, The Shape of Water. The movie was written and directed by Guillermo del Toro with the collaboration of Vanessa Taylor for script writing. The movie tells the story of a splendid and unusual love story for 119 minutes, leaving no doubts that love has no boundaries. The film can be categorized as a drama, fantasy and romance movie but also adding a big amount of science fiction to the story.

The main human character, named Sally Hawkins played by Elisa Esposito, is a character with a very special personality and easiness to transmit emotions without using words. Sally Hawkins a mute woman who works in a laboratory cleaning after the experiments of the American government in 1962. Her enchantment comes from within herself and the way she expresses all of her feelings in the movie through sign language and facial expressions. Her romance with the amphibian man starts not for the love story in the movie, but also to explain the immensity of love without words. Although both characters can’t speak out the way they feel, the acting expresses exactly everything you need to know about their relationship.

The amphibian man, played by Doug Jones, plays an important role in the movie. The movie does not focus a lot of the background story of this particular character. However, the movie shows enough about the amphibian man’s personality to develop an understanding of how this character sees life. Guillermo del Toro was able to capture and show the audience the curiosity of a character without speaking one word. The growth of this character, in particular, becomes more and more important throughout the movie. The story shows how two species can interact with each other and learn about culture and language through signs and feelings.

The movie was inspired in the 60s, during the rough times of the Cold War from the American perspective. The colors and overall hue of the film gives a vintage feel to the entire movie. Also, making it possible for someone to act against the government without any technology to spread around information. The time it’s an important factor to progressively develop the story without the interference of any major issues. The movie leaves an important message about love, which should be heard and seen by everyone. Love to humans is not as simple as we think.
