Crosby in America

Harry Lillis Crosby also known as Bing Crosby was born in May of 1903. He may have been known more for his music but he did make quite an impact on American film. Crosby signed a contract with Paramount Pictures in the early 1930s, he began his career in film; starring in musicals specifically musical comedies. While Crosby was making it big in one industry it also was benefiting him in another. Crosby created soundtracks for some of the movies he starred in, some of which became hit singles. Crosby's film career hit its high note in the 1940s when he co-starred with Bob Hope who was a comedian. This partnership was the beginning of the Road To films which consisted of seven films in total.

Crosby would continue to star in films over the coming years. In 1944, Bing Crosby starred in 'Going My Way' as Father Chuck O'Malley and winning his one and only Academy Award for the role. Between 1944 and 1947, Crosby was named the top box office star. All though Bing Crosby is no longer with us today he is still known as one of the top grossing film performers of all time. Also, over the course of his career, he had over 300 hit singles due to some of his music appearing in his movies. Crosby appeared in the last road to film in 1962 titled, 'Road to Hong Kong'. This film would wrap up a majority of his acting career.

Although we would not see Bing Crosby appear on the big screen anymore we could look forward to seeing him on the small screen. He hosted 'The Hollywood Palace' and his own TV show 'The Bing Crosby Show' which was unfortunately short-lived. He was also seen on his Christmas special every year and the guest appearances that he made on TV every so often. Something else that he had accomplished in his lifetime would have been the establishment of Bing Crosby National Pro-Amateur tournament.

The saying or quote by Bing Crosby, as shown above, would be the last thing he said before collapsing of a heart attack on a golf course in Spain on October 14, 1977. The time that Bing Crosby spent on earth did not go to waste, he used every moment to make his mark.

I would love to hear everyone's thoughts about Bing Crosby. What have you seen with him in it? What music of his have you listened to? Also, I would love to know what everyone thinks I could do better in my next blog posting.

Thank you for reading,

  1. Hi Heidi,
I thought you did a great job on your blog post. I had no idea that Bing Crosby was an actor. I only know him for his Christmas music. My favorite song is probably White Christmas. I'll have to check out some of his movies now.

    1. Hello Kamali,

I would definitely check out his movies, he’s known for doing a lot of musicals so you’ll probably see him sing within his movies as well. Also, I can’t wait to read some of your blog posts.

      Thank you so much,

      Heidi
